In order to see and experience the modern Barcelona; the new city that was theorized and planed in advanced during the second half of the 19th century, it is essential to go beyond what is today Barcelona’s immediate touristic center.
Therefore, this tour will start exactly at a point where old Barcelona ends. We will walk through Barcelona’s Eixample district (Eixample is Extension in Catalan), the most iconic urban image of Barcelona that is mostly known as “Plan Cerda” drafted by engineer and visionary Ildefons Cerdà. We will explore the present architectural outcome of this ambitious and innovative plan that sought to urbanize an extensive untouched land outside the 19th century’s city, and transform Barcelona from a condensed walled city into a modern metropolis. We will discover its original urban rationalities and objectives as they were originally built, its evolution and transformation along more than 150 years of implementation, and the unique relation between this pioneering urban layout and its most celebrated magnificent “modernista” (Catalan Art Nouveau movement) buildings that were realized by true master architects like Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Lluís Domènech i Montaner. We will visit secret interior gardens of the typical Eixample blocks that are being renovated since the late 80s, as well as recently renovated market, that revolutionized completely its immediate surroundings of Sant Antoni Neighborhood.
In summery this tour is perfect to all of you that are excited to discover a unique combination of local but yet metropolitan perspective of Barcelona, those that are curious to find out more about the most revolutionary chapter of Barcelona’s urban development, a chapter that is constantly being written and that made this city what it is today.
We don’t charge children under 12 years old.
